Remind children that we found out about the different food groups in the last session. What were they? Fruit and vegetables, Cereals, Meat, fish and eggs, Dairy products and High energy foods. Explain that we eat a balanced diet when we eat the right amounts of food from the different groups. We do need to eat a variety of the right sort of foods too, so that our meals are not boring. Point out that children should eat some foods from all 5 groups, as all are needed for healthy growth.
Introduce the food pyramid as a guide to a healthy diet, explaining how the shape of the triangle guides us to a balanced diet. Ask –Which foods can we eat freely? and Which foods can we have as a treat? Discuss which foods we need plenty of, which foods should be eaten in moderation and which for a special treat. Ask children to select ingredients from the range of products for a healthy and an unhealthy lunchbox. (Y2) or for a day’s meals. (Y3) Emphasise that it is alright to have some treats, but that we must balance that with items from the other food groups. Talk about saving the ‘treat’ until last, so that you can look forward to it while you are eating the rest of your lunch.
Point out that healthy eating is important for adults too – see video clip at https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjr8mp3/articles/zhkbn9q

In the last Session we found out that food is one of the basic needs for survival. Explain that today we are going to look at the foods we humans eat, and start to learn about what makes a balanced diet to help keep us healthy.
Introduce food groups. At this stage divide food into 5 simple groups – 1. Fruit and vegetables – mainly vitamins and minerals (special substances to help the body stay healthy). 2. Cereals (bread) – mainly carbohydrates (parts of food which give the body energy). 3. Meat, fish and eggs – mainly protein (parts of food which help the body grow). 4. Dairy products – mainly protein (parts of food which help the body grow) and vitamins and minerals (special substances to help the body stay healthy) 5. High energy foods (butter, cakes, chocolate) – mainly fats and sugars (parts of food which helps the body keep warm and get energy).
Discuss the fact that we also need water to remain healthy – some is obtained from drinks (including plain water) and some from other foods.
Together look at http://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk/Activity.aspx?contentId=55§ionId=37&siteId=3 and sort foods into the food groups.
Use pictures from magazines or drawings to sort food products into groups and label (session resources).

E.g., The house shone brightly, illuminating the dull surroundings. – Finally, try and write a sentence about the house.

Discuss with children what animals including humans need to grow & survive (refer back to Living things and their habitats Strand if already taught). List their ideas on f/c, e.g. food, water, rest, shelter, air, love, etc. Point out that food, water & air are the three most important things for the growth & survival of animals. Ask which children have a pet at home. Do they provide food, water & air for their pets? What else do they provide? A hutch, dog or cat basket, a stable, etc. Perhaps they groom or bath their pets or take them for walks or provide exercise opportunities, e.g. a hamster wheel. Talk about handling pets with care & treating all animals (including humans) with respect. It may be possible to have a pet available for children to observe & even handle. Safety: Remind children they should not touch animals they don’t know without an adult. Wash hands after handling animals. Need to be aware of any allergies the children may have. Revisit http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/wwww/living/index_choice.shtml (this site may have already been used in Session A of All living things Strand) and click on Why? to rehearse the needs of pets. Also look at Where? and click on the picture of the Vets to find out more about pet animals’ needs. Show children the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOLP8p0jSoA. Point out that it’s not just pets that need looking after; it is also important that farm animals are looked after properly – watch another RSPCA video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULlnRZz69QE. This video shows that all animals (pets, farm animals and wild animals) including humans have the same basic needs of food, water and air and also shelter. The RSPCA also give advice for keeping some farm animals as pets which may be appropriate to look at if some of your class have them as pets – http://www.rspca.org.uk/allaboutanimals/pets/farmanimals. Zoo animals also have to be looked after and given suitable food and shelter alongside water. Emphasise that any animals we keep or use need to have care to remain healthy. What working animals can children describe? E.g. shire horses, dogs for the blind, rescue dogs, mouser cats, sheep dogs, police horses, homing pigeons, truffle-finding pigs, donkeys on the beach, etc. Animals living in the wild have to find these basic needs for themselves. Many parent animals look after their young in a similar way to human adults looking after their children. ideas for how to look after a pet

Thursday | Literacy | Class two online English lesson Thursday 4th Feb – Have a quick game of conjunctions match up to recap and refresh knowledge from previous lessons https://wordwall.net/resource/44156/english/conjunctions-match-up-game – Have a look at the picture from quest. Try to imagine that you are actually in the picture. What would you see or feel? – Use the picture to fill out the senses table. In the first column write what you may see if you were actually there. – In the second column write what you might hear if you were in the picture. Look at who might be talking and what might make noise? – In the third column, what would you be able to smell? Would it smell nice or nasty? – In the fourth column, write what you would be able to feel and how it would feel. – Finally, underneath use your table to write two descriptive sentences about the picture.
