Our Intent:
Our approach to teaching PE is grounded in the three elements of our school vision: ‘Together we love, learn and grow.’
We inspire and challenge our children, through a safe and happy learning environment, to be resilient and determined and achieve excellent standards in PE.
To provide an exciting PE curriculum, through which children enjoy and have the confidence and resilience to participate in a range of physical activities.
To ensure any inactive learners are inspired to engage with physical opportunities offered to them and all learners build fitness through sustained periods of daily exercise.
To ensure that there are equal opportunities for all children, regardless of background or circumstance, to participate in extra-curricular activities and develop a love of physical education and a range of sports.
For pupils to develop a wide range of skills and determination to practice and therefore improve.
To equip our children with the skills and knowledge they need, to embed lifelong healthy habits and understanding of all aspects of a healthy lifestyle including mental wellbeing and nutrition.
To support and encourage our children to be advocates of sport, being proud of their achievements, both individually and as a team player.
To prepare and inspire children for further learning in PE in secondary school and beyond.
What does Physical Education look like in our school?
Our Implementation:
In EYFS, Physical Education is taught primarily through a play-based curriculum that focuses on both gross and fine motor skills. Coordination, balance and agility are developed through opportunities both in and outside the classroom with a focus on building core strength and awareness of risk and opportunity.
In EYFS, children partake in weekly Physical Development lessons.
From Year 1 the curriculum is mapped from physical development in EYFS to the national curriculum objectives from Y1-6. The curriculum progresses each year (See curriculum progression document). As a school we use Striver as our driver for PE Specialist coaches are used throughout the year to enhance both the children’s learning and the subject knowledge of the staff.
Curriculum design ensures competitive opportunities are available for all children, through house competitions and then through interschool competitions, particularly in readiness for secondary school.
Children in Y3/4 will be given the opportunity to secure the National Curriculum swimming requirements, leaving time in Y5 and Y6 for further development if needed.
Extra-curricular opportunities are provided to enhance mainstream physical education through a series of afterschool clubs provided by specialist coaches.
Development of sports leaders to inspire and lead sustained physical activity during lunch and play times.
We make links with local schools to arrange small scale competitions, so that children are ready to participate in the competition pathway in the future.
The impact of our PE approach is:
Children have a deep knowledge of a range of sports and the skills required for different sports. Pupils can access and follow an ambitious curriculum that has our vision for exceptionally high expectations as a driver.
Standards in assessment outcomes are very strong.
Children love participating in sport, developing lifelong healthy habits.
Children strive for sporting success and develop skills of resilience, sportsmanship and determination.
